      Aims and objectives:
      To introduce participants to simple changes General Dental Practitioners and Dental Hygienists/Therapists can implement to improve their periodontal outcomes within the practice setting, specifically looking at oral hygiene instruction and non-surgical therapy.

      Learning outcomes:
      By the end of this session participants should be able to:
      1. Understand the need for periodontal screening to recognise and diagnose periodontal disease early. To interpret these results and plan further assessment and investigations accordingly.
      2. Demonstrate effective oral hygiene instruction for individual patients based on their specific needs and understand the importance of this when considering likely outcomes.
      3. Explain the importance of smoking cessation with regards periodontal treatment outcomes.
      4. Identify the appropriate instruments and apply techniques in carrying out effective supragingival and subgingival debridement of the tooth surface.
      5. Understand the guidelines and factors to consider when referring your patients for periodontal treatment.
